What We Do

Advancing the pump industry through collaboration to develop industry standards, education and resources and by advocating for the industry.

For more than a century the Hydraulic Institute (HI) has been centering the pump industry around developing standards and technical resources, advancing solutions for pump system performance and efficiency, educating the global marketplace and advocating for the industry.

Industry experts collaborate to advance the industry by volunteering their time, talent, and expertise. The Institute offers a variety of programs designed to meet the needs of member and partner organizations, including participation in and access to statistics programs, standards, training and resources for workforce development and participation in industry initiatives.

What We Do

Standards

HI is an approved Standards Development Organization by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), publishing more than 30 National Standards (ANSI/HI) covering pump and system nomenclature, definitions, design, application, installation, operation, maintenance and testing. HI Standards cover positive displacement pumps of Reciprocating, Controlled-Volume Metering, Air-Operated Diaphragm, and Rotary type and Rotodynamic pumps of centrifugal, mixed and axial flow type.

What We Do

Training

HI’s educational foundation, Pump Systems Matter (PSM) harnesses the knowledge and resources of the Hydraulic Institute and provides essential training to the industry. Focusing on pump and system fundamentals, pump system optimization and assessment as well as the components used in pumping systems, PSM provides needed resources for all levels of experience. Access has never been easier with live-instructor led or on-demand options that range from less than an hour to multiple day courses.

What We Do

Guidebooks & Papers

HI guidebooks address pump related topics from a practical perspective and end-user focus. Pump guidebooks provide in-depth explanations of specific applications or components and address system concerns including assessment, optimization, reliability and life cycle costs to improve pump system efficiency and energy consumption.

What We Do

Pump System Assessment Professional (PSAP)

Pump System Assessment Professional (PSAP) certification validates the knowledge and experience of industry experts. PSAPs meet the standard of excellence required to collect, review and analyze the data needed to fully assess pumping systems and recommend strategies for optimization, efficiency, reliability and overall system improvement.

What We Do

Pump Test Laboratory Approval Program (PTLAP)

HI’s Pump Test Laboratory Approval Program (PTLAP) program clearly identifies labs that exceed the standard of excellence. A third-party audit ensures that each approved lab maintains up-to-date quality management programs for its people, processes and equipment, while testing in accordance with HI 40.6 Methods for Rotodynamic Pump Efficiency Testing – the standard incorporated by reference by the US Department of Energy. Only laboratories that achieve PTLAP certification are eligible to list pumps in HI’s Energy Rating Program.

What We Do

Energy Rating (ER) Program

The HI Energy Rating (ER) Program communicates the energy efficiency of individual pumps relative to the broader marketplace. The ER Label clearly identifies the energy efficiency of specific pumps within an overall energy consumption framework while the publicly available ER Database provides access to labeled product for verification and the development of qualified product lists for pump incentive programs by utilities.
