Founded in 1891, Lewis Pumps manufactured its first vertical centrifugal sulphuric acid pump in 1914, beginning a specialization which has continued to the present time. Today, Lewis is the world’s acknowledged leader in pumping equipment for sulphur chemistry applications. The use of specialty alloys in our equipment dates to the mid 1920’s. The original Lewmet alloy, Lewmet 55, was developed in the late 1960’s and is still used in sulphuric acid pumping equipment to temperatures of approximately 140 degrees C. Today, the Lewmet alloy family includes specialty cast and wrought materials for a variety of corrosive environments. Combined with material selections to provide maximum corrosion resistance, the hydraulic and mechanical engineering concepts embodied in Lewis Pumps assure the operator of outstanding performance and reliability in high temperature sulphuric acid, molten sulphur, and other high specific gravity fluids.
