Workforce development resources needed to support the 1.1 MM job openings in construction, manufacturing, and mining
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, US employers are looking to fill 8.9 MM open jobs as of January 2024, which is a slight improvement from the 10.4MM openings the prior January. With about 1.1 MM of these openings in construction, manufacturing, and mining, it illustrates the continued need of manufacturing and construction companies to focus on transferring knowledge from their aging workforces and bring new hires up to speed on the fundamentals so that they can focus on the higher-level job specific training.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, US employers are looking to fill 8.9 MM open jobs as of January 2024, which is a slight improvement from the 10.4MM openings the prior January. With about 1.1 MM of these openings in construction, manufacturing, and mining, it illustrates the continued need of manufacturing and construction companies to focus on transferring knowledge from their aging workforces and bring new hires up to speed on the fundamentals so that they can focus on the higher-level job specific training.
In October of 2021, the Hydraulic Institute’s (HI) Board of Directors approved a strategic direction that assigned focus to improving the image of the industry to potential hires and developing resources to train the industry, which was discussed in the workforce blog from October 2023. HI has continued to focus on developing on-demand modular training resources for the fluid handling industry to efficiently onboard new employees.
The suite of on-demand modular training has grown to include the following:
- Introduction to Pump Fundamentals (Part of Basic Training for Members and Partners)
- Introduction to System and Component Fundamentals (Part of Basic Training for Members and Partners)
- Pump and System Fundamentals (Rotodynamic Pump Focus).
- Also includes components such as: motors, variable frequency drives, couplings, bearings, and seals.
- Positive Displacement Fundamentals
- Commercial Buildings – Pump System Optimization
Future on-demand modular training will include the following:
- Pump System Certified Level 1 Training and Certification Prep
- Pump System Certified Level 2 Training and Certification Prep
- Pump System Optimization & Assessment
- Pump System Assessment Professional – Certification Prep
- Valves 101 & 201, in cooperation with the Valve Manufacturers Association
- Mechanical seals
The modular training covers a range of introductory and fundamental fluid handling topics, future fundamental level certifications and it can be consumed at the employees desired pace, which makes it an ideal resource for standardized onboarding of new hires.
